Mahjong enthusiasts can't wait to resume the recreation, but have to strictly follow the contact registration and put on gloves in Mahjong venues.

Presenter: With local outbreaks more under control, the Central Epidemic Command Center announced that entertainment venues such as mahjong parlors can reopen starting Oct. 5. Epidemic prevention regulations such as wearing masks, hand sanitizing and contact registration are still in place. Plastic shields should be installed on the mahjong table and players are required to wear gloves while playing. In restaurants however, CECC announced that plastic shields can be removed. In convenience stores, hot foods like pick-and-mix oden, tea eggs and hotdogs will no longer have to be served by staff.

Crisscross plastic shields with room underneath are in place on the mahjong tables. All mahjong players upon entering the parlor are required to follow through with contact registration and to have their temperature taken. What’s most important is to have their masks and hand gloves on during the games. It is the first day of reopening, and many players find it hard to play with all these regulations.

Mahjong players: " It's hard to get a good grip and feel of your mahjong tiles wearing gloves.”

Mahjong player 2:" It's hard to feel the difference between 6 and 7 bamboo titles now, but I can't do it well anyways even without the gloves.”

Many players complained about sweaty palms, slippery grip, and loss of sense of touch to the tiles while wearing gloves. Mahjong parlor operators have all been fully vaccinated and they made sure that their parlors have been thoroughly disinfected before reopening.

Ms. Hung, Mahjong parlor staff:”Many people have called to book tables two days before reopening. I think we’ll be full in the afternoon.”

With local outbreaks more under control, the Central Epidemic Command Center announced that plastic shields can be removed in restaurants and hot foods like pick-and-mix oden, tea eggs, and hotdogs will no longer have to be served by staff in convenience stores.

Citizen:”This is definitely more convenient. There are usually a lot of customers during working hours on weekdays and if customers can't help themselves with the hot foods, it’s too much work for the staff.

Citizen 2:”I'll just remember to sanitize my hands after I help myself with the hot foods.”

Some customers say they would rather pick and pack the hot foods themselves since they don’t always like the staff’s choices for them. For the convenience and safety of everyone, the public is reminded to keep practicing preventative and protective measures against COVID-19 as life rolls back to some level of normality.
