In response, Taiwan's Sports Administration said Lin entered a national training program while in high school, and training fees, training camp opportunities, and equipment are subsidized by the government.

Nineteen-year-old table tennis player Lin Yun-ju from Taiwan played an enthralling match of up to seven games during the men's singles semifinals at the Tokyo Olympics with No. 1 table tennis player Fan Zhen-dong from China on Thursday, July 29. Although Lin lost 3-4 in the end, his incredible skills and the air of calm he exhibited won him much praise. Some Chinese netizens commented saying that Lin is such a great player because he was trained by a coach from China. Taiwan's Sports Administration said on the 29th that Lin was indeed trained by Chinese coaches hired by his grand-uncle during Lin's elementary years. However, starting in junior high, Lin entered the national young sports talent training program, in which training fees, training camp opportunities, and equipment are all subsidized by the government. The Sports Administration further explained that Lin had begun competing professionally since 2017, and has competed in major international table tennis competitions including the T2 Diamond event, ITTF World Tour, China Table Tennis Super League, and such. After competing in the 2020 China Table Tennis Super League, Lin received training in China for more than a month along with Taiwanese table tennis players, also a Taiwanese Olympian this year, Cheng I-ching.

Lin Yun-ju (July 23, 2019), Taiwanese Table Tennis Player:"I study my opponents by observing how they play on video record."

Lin is a quiet person. In the past when he had once won against Fan Zhen-dong, he only commented saying that it was really important to be well-prepared before the game. Lin's father posted on his Facebook on the night of the 29th, expressing appreciation for all those who have helped and taught his son. Lin's father stressed that Lin could not have accomplished this much and wouldn't have the chance to compete on the Olympics stage without the help from a lot of people, including Lin's granduncle who saw his talent and hired a Chinese coach for him in the first place. Lin's father also thanked the national young sports talent training program under the Sports Administration for offering his son the best training and protection against athletics injuries throughout the years. It is what propelled Lin's table tennis skills and helped him grow. Lin's father listed the people and companies that offered assistance along the way but did not thank China specifically.
