Slovakia to Donate Reciprocal 10,000 Vaccines to Taiwan
Slovakia said "it has not forgotten its friend" and announced its plan to donate 10,000 vaccines to Taiwan. It is the second E.U. country after Lithuania to donate masks to Taiwan.
On July 15, the European Union announced it would subsidize up to 75 percent of transport costs for vaccine donations between countries. Over three million vaccines have already been donated through the EU mechanism, with one of the latest donations being a gift of 10,000 vaccines from Slovakia to Taiwan.
Joanne Ou, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:”The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deepest gratitude for Slovakia's sincere friendship and goodwill. They are still working out the final details and legal procedures, so we don't know what kind of vaccines we are getting or when they will be delivered at this point in time.”
Taiwan previously donated 700,000 masks to Slovakia. Slovakia's representative office in Taiwan wrote on its Facebook that it remembers its friends and the vaccines are a gift in return.
Last year, Slovakia included Taiwan on its green list. This past May, the Slovak parliament passed a resolution supporting Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly.
Juraj Droba (May 21, 2021), Governor, Bratislava Region:”Wish the best luck go directly to the island of Taiwan and even more specifically to Kaohsiung City, which is our partner city. I also hope that WHO would be able to help and maybe will help Taiwan become a member of WHO member.”
On July 15, the European Parliament criticized China for its human rights record and expressed support for a bilateral investment agreement between the European Union and Taiwan.
The US House Foreign Affairs Committee, meanwhile, has passed the "EAGLE" bill, which supports enhancing trade ties with Taiwan, official negotiations with Taiwan's representative office in the US, and the stance that the United Nations' recognition of China is irrelevant to Taiwan.
