The Taroko Express accident site has been repaired and rail traffic resumed on April 19. Transportation and Communications Minister Lin Chia-lung, who has already resigned but not yet left office, says his job is now done and he can hand over his position to the next minister.
After 17 days of repairs, rail traffic resumed around the site of the Taroko Express accident. The first local train of the day left Yilan at 5:27 a.m., passing the site at 6:40 a.m.
Transportation and Communications Minister Lin Chia-lung was on board the train, along with Acting Taiwan Railways Director Chi Wen-jong. Lin later said the repairs were completed one day ahead of schedule and it was a very smooth ride. He says he hopes the repairs can also help rebuild Taiwan Railways' reputation.

According to reports, the Executive Yuan will replace Lin with one of his deputies, Wang Kwo-tsai. Unlike Lin, Wang has a transportation background and holds a PhD in transportation and logistics management from National Chiao Tung University. He previously served as director-general of the Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau, chair of Chung Hwa Post, chair of the Grand Hotel, acting chair of Taiwan International Ports Corp., and acting transportation and communications minister. He has been a deputy minister at the MOTC since 2016.

民進黨立委 林俊憲 vs. 交通部次長 陳彥伯表示：「(外界都猜測，是王國材次長會升任部長，是不是這樣？) 外界對我們王政次的期待很高。」
王國材17號晚間在臉書貼文，是到花蓮視察太魯閣事故地點通車前整備狀況，放上在隧道口與工作人員合影，並寫上"努力!再努力!!"字樣，對於外傳內定接任交通部長，王國材僅回應"由行政院宣布"，並未否認。
