Doctors are warning that overexposure to space heaters can cause burns even if heaters don't get as hot as water.
Keep a proper distance. You can't get too close. Also, pay attention to how long it's been on.

Many people stay warm during the winter with halogen lamps. However, overexposure can lead to low-temperature burns.
Diabetics and dialysis patients should be especially careful.
Everyone has a different level of sensation. Diabetics or dialysis patients are at higher risk for developing peripheral nerve disorders over the long term. They may not know when they suffer a burn.
An-Nan Hospital emergency room doctor Ko Chi-lin says factors affecting the severity of a burn include temperature and length of exposure. Low-temperature burns are the result of a lower temperature and longer exposure.A sunburn is one type of a low-temperature burn.
Low-temperature burns are most often caused by halogen lamps, followed by hand warmers. During the summer when you go to the beach, do you feel your skin burning? No. You only feel the heat of the sun and your skin only starts peeling (later on). This is also a kind of low-temperature burn.
Most people don't stay in one position the entire night and therefore don't stay in constant contact with a heat source. Those with impaired sensation, including those who are inebriated or have taken sleeping pills, have to be careful when using heaters.
Heaters are best used on timers to reduce exposure. Central heating is also a safer option.
