The NCC's decision to not renew the license is controversial. Some people were so upset that they self-immolated in front of the channel's headquarters. Civic groups amassed on Dec. 10 to show their support for CTi News and express their dismay that people had to self-immolate.
I've lived this long, but I have never cried once. Today, however, I am absolutely devastated. That's why I came out today.
This was a coordinated effort from the Presidential Office to the NCC to suppress the freedom of the media. They're trying to turn Taiwan into a place where one person calls all the shots. Will the people stand for this?
The NCC gave four reasons for rejecting the application, including a malfunctioning internal control mechanism and excessive violations, but did not allow scholars and experts to examine them. Civic groups therefore intend to protest daily. In related news, a court rejected an injunction filed by CTi News, and it has appealed. A decision is expected before CTi News goes off the air on Dec. 11.
