Taichung City has enacted a zero ractopamine residue standard to ensure that ractopamine pork won't be used for school meals. Meal suppliers whose pork is found to contain ractopamine will have their contracts terminated and be put on a blacklist.


There may be issues with student food safety once Taiwan opens its doors to imports of pork containing ractopamine on Jan. 1, 2021. On Nov. 24, Taichung City Mayor Lu Shiow-yen sent a message to the central government during a city council meeting.

The policy of allowing imports of U.S. pork containing ractopamine should be postponed.

The city's Education Bureau said a zero residue testing standard for ractopamine would be applied to all schools. Schools and their meal suppliers will have to renegotiate their contracts before Dec. 15 to add a provision for a zero residue standard. Any company found to be using ractopamine pork will have its contract terminated immediately, be placed on a blacklist, and be banned from bidding for future contracts.

If a company is found to be using ractopamine pork, we will deduct 20 points for the first incident. We will also terminate its contract and put it on a blacklist. We think schools need to carefully consider the options when choosing suppliers.

Nutritionists and luncheon secretaries are helping schools to examine food sources. Parents approve of these methods. Various Taichung parents' associations have vowed to jointly take down any unscrupulous supplier that uses ractopamine pork.

Parents are taking charge of supervising schools and suppliers, as well as conducting spot inspections. The presidents of parents' associations have also joined forces to take down any supplier that uses ractopamine pork.
