Many people are wondering how the mutual relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. will unfold after the U.S. presidential election. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harry Tseng said he would not answer any hypothetical question when one lawmaker brought up the idea to invite Donald Trump to Taiwan.
It is weird to be asking me this question because as lawmakers, you have already passed a resolution on the US-Taiwan relationship. In fact, MOFA has not planned anything such as inviting Mr. Trump to Taiwan. If we were, we would make an announcement at an appropriate time.
We are on the same page, therefore there is no incongruence. Hypothetical questions such as will the U.S. President Donald Trump be visiting Taiwan before he steps down or whether the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Taiwan or whether U.S. fleets will be stationed in Taiwan are not part of our plans.
Meanwhile, Deputy Economic Affairs Minister Chen Chern-chyi will lead a delegation to the U.S. to participate in the first Taiwan-US Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, which, the MOFA stressed, will help establish a closer cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. in terms of global economic strategic partnership. It hopes this dialogue mechanism will continue despite the change in political power in the U.S.
