Motor Vehicles Office Raising Awareness on Blind Spots|

According to Taichung Motor Vehicles Office statistics, 67 people were killed between January and May by bus and truck drivers. This is five more than the same period last year. A simulation in Taichung was held on July 31 to educate people on safe driving distance.

How dangerous are truck and bus blind spots? A simulation shows drivers of large vehicles have at least four blind spots.

Many scooter drivers like the shade by the front left tire. This is extremely dangerous. The area directly in front is as well, because you can't see anything directly in front. You can't see anything in the yellow area or the area (to the left of the driver).

Bus driver Mr. Lee says there will always be blind spots no matter how careful a driver is. In particular, the space next to a vehicle door is extremely dangerous.

I let (large vehicles) go first. To keep your distance? Right, right, right.

The yellow line marks the driver's blind spot. According to the Taichung Motor Vehicles Office, 67 people were killed by bus or truck drivers between January and May this year, up five from last year. Drivers behind large vehicles need to either maintain a safe driving distance of at least 1 meter or avoid blind spots. The government is looking into revising laws to protect both sides.

The interior-tire blind spot of large vehicles is responsible for the highest number of vehicular accident deaths.

With regards to this kind of vehicular accidents, we have been holding discussions with Transportation and Communications Minister Lin Chia-lung about establishing a fund (for victims) or some other forms of compensation.

On Oct. 16 last year, a gravel truck driver killed a grandparent and grandchild on a scooter after making a right turn.

Relevant agencies are trying to raise awareness about safe distances with a particular focus on educating the elderly about vehicular safety.

去年十月十六日下午,台中市發生砂石車撞死祖孫的意外,一輛砂石車路口右轉撞到一旁同向行駛的機車,造成機車騎士祖孫兩人被捲進車底死亡;
