Two students received zero marks for not wearing face masks properly during this year's Comprehensive Assessment Program, the most crucial exams for junior high school students, which took place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While some believe the punishment is too harsh, the testing committee said they made the decision because the students downright refused to wear masks despite repeated guidance.
The Ministry of Education has stressed that all students need to wear masks during all exams or their test score will not count. Despite the announcement, two students still violated the rules. The committee in charge of nation-wide exams have ruled that, except for social science, the other five test subjects will not count for one student, whereas for the other student, the English test will not count.
They pulled off their masks and refused to put them back on. We have specifically stressed the importance of disease prevention regulations. When they violated the regulations, it was unfair for all others who fall in line.
The two students deliberately violated the regulations and didn't wear masks on purpose. Tseng Fen-lan said that the committee in charge of the exams quickly reached an agreement on the punishment. The National Senior High School Teachers' Union said they respect the committee's decision since the rules were clearly laid out and repeatedly stressed ahead of time. A senior high school teacher said that the admission quota for senior high schools and junior colleges are far more than the 200,000 test takers, thus the two students can still apply for private schools after having their tests voided.
We don't deny the fact that some private schools have no entry threshold as far as test scores are concerned. As long as a student have a middle school diploma, they can be admitted. These (private schools) face a lot of pressure to recruit enough students.
As to the reason why the two students deliberately refused to wear masks, the New Taipei Teachers' Union said that it's necessary to get to the bottom of the matter. Some teachers have also pointed out that a minority of students have no interest in school at all and since they have to take part in the exams, they treat it as a pure formality and that's why there are students who sleep through the exams or deliberately violate regulations every year.
