Beware of a mouthful of pesticide when you munch your fruits and vegetables! Latest results on pesticide residue on agricultural produce show that 5.1 percent of the vegetables and 3.1 percent of the fruits failed to meet the proper standards, with celery and strawberry topping their respective categories in having the most pesticide residue.

Many housewives are carefully picking vegetables and fruits at the local market. Their concern is to have a healthy diet while ingesting as little pesticide as possible.

Vegetables like broccolis and peppers all have (pesticide residue). (Are you worried about it?) I am. (So you'd just wash it a few more times?) Yes, I just keep washing it.

Most members of the public are suspicious about pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables. According to the latest test results from the Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute, 5.1 percent of the vegetables failed their test, while 3.1 percent of the fruits failed the test. The three types of vegetables that contain the most pesticide residue are celery, peas and radish, other common vegetables such as green peppers and chives also made the list. In terms of fruits, strawberries, passion fruits and citrus fruit are found to contain the most residue. The Agriculture and Food Agency said that part of the reason is that peasants did not used authorized pesticide on their produce, therefore no matter how little residue is left on the fruits and vegetables, the amount would always be deemed inappropriate.

Not many peasants have used the recommended pesticide (on their produce). If other types of pesticide are used, no matter how little of it is left on the produce, it would be deemed inappropriate.

The Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute said that the types of produce they tested all have surface layers that can be peeled off, and the public simply need to wash the vegetable properly to avoid ingesting pesticide residue. The Agriculture and Food Agency said that, on top of guiding peasants to use proper pesticide, it is also in the process of developing natural compound in order to reduce the use of chemical pesticide.
