This footage shows an airplane traveling along a taxiway at Taoyuan International Airport. Whenever it rains, the tires of airplanes become muddy. Recently, a China Airlines pilot posted photos of taxiway potholes on Facebook, and wrote that there hasn't been a single time in the past five years where airplanes were able to travel on a smooth taxiway. The pilot also said repairs are only making the holes bigger. Meanwhile, an aviation engineer says Taoyuan International Airport's potholed taxiways have become an international joke.

On rainy days, the taxiways may split. There may be several holes of two to three meters square. Foreign aviation engineers say whenever they see an extremely dirty airplane undercarriage, they know that the airplane has been at Taoyuan International Airport.

The photos posted by the pilot on Facebook include one showing an airplane's tires punctured by potholes. Scholars say there are safety concerns to consider, and advise Taoyuan International Airport to make adjustments and improve taxiways based on the city's topography and geology.

When an airplane passes over a pothole, there may be a slipstream, which could stir up the pothole fragments and cause them to drift in the air. These fragments could damage this airplane or another's airframe or engine.

In response, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation said it has 9.4 kilometers of taxiway left to repair, or 30 percent of the total. It will carry out the repairs in stages and aim to complete the project by 2020.
