Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je will campaign for his second term in office. A survey by the Taipei City City Research Development and Evaluation Commission found that Ko's satisfaction rating has dropped from 80 percent when he was first elected, to 40 percent at its lowest point, the murder of a schoolchild on a street near the school. During his term in office, there has been a wave of resignations from the city government. Yesterday the city government admitted that the Indigenous Peoples Commission Chairperson, Chen Xiu-hui, resigned. She is the 17th municipal department head to resign during Ko's 2-year tenure. Since Ko Wen-je took office on Dec. 25, 2014, there has been a wave of resignations from the city government. As the heads of departments leave one by one, Ko Wen-je still wants to stand again for mayor. The competition for the position is fierce. Ko was elected on a wave of populism, but his handling of issues ranging from the Taipei Dome to the abolition of pensioners' traditional old-age gift envelope have eroded his support. A survey by the Taipei City Research Development and Evaluation Commission found that when Ko was first elected and started to investigate six projects, his satisfaction rating was 78 percent. Then with the scandal of a Japanese porn star's photo being used to promote the MRT travel card, it fell to 60 percent. The following year, when the Chunghsiao overpass was finally demolished after decades of planning, his satisfaction rating rose back to 78 percent. Then after the murder of a little girl on the street his rating fell to 40 percent. The RDEC's take is that the child's murder in broad daylight on the street next to an MRT station shocked the public and left it with deep unease at a time of political flux, dropping satisfaction rates to a new low. ==CHU CHAO-HSIANG Research Development and Evaluation Commission Chairperson== It was something that collectively shocked and hurt people, so naturally, they look for someone to blame and the most obvious person to bear responsibility is the city mayor. ==KO WEN-JE Taipei City Mayor== Each survey by different companies yields different results so the analysis is different. It's like blind people touching an elephant, everyone has a different idea of what an elephant is, unless we put all the parts together we don't really know. Ko appears to have confidence in his own opinion on the ups and downs of satisfaction ratings. Compared with the three previous mayors, Chen Shui-bian, Ma Ying-jeou and Hau Lung-bin, Ko has wildly veering satisfaction ratings which may affect the 2018 mayoral election.
