OPPOSITION PARTIES WILL VOTE ON IMPEACHMENT DEC. 9|韓在野3黨提朴槿惠彈劾案 12/9投票表決

On Dec 3, three opposition parties in South Korea filed a motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye, which will be voted on by the National Assembly on Dec 9. Crowds also marched on the streets of Seoul in protest. South Korea has seen massive street demonstrations for 6th consecutive weekends. President Park's approval ratings remain at the 4% record low, and the public continue to demand her resignation. Crowds swarmed the streets of Seoul again on Dec 3 and gathered outside the Grand National Party headquarters in protest, denouncing the ruling party as an accomplice to President Park. The number of protesters exceeded 1 million by evening and crowds protested just 100 meters away from the Blue House. Over 220,000 workers have lunched strikes and demanded the president to step down since Park apologized for the 3rd time on Nov 29. ==SPOKESPERSON Korean Confederation of Trade Unions== The public expected Park to announce her resignation during her 3rd speech, but she denied her wrongdoing and shamelessly left the decision of her resignation to the parliament. As the public outcry escalates, three opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, the People's Party, and Justice Party, submitted their motion to impeach the president, and the National Assembly will vote on it on Dec 9. With a total of 300 members, the motion will require a 2/3 majority, or 200 votes, to pass. Besides the 171 members who raised the motion and the speaker, it will need 28 more votes. In other words, the outcome will depend on how many members of the governing Grand National Party turn on their own leader. According to South Korean media reports, the impeachment motion accuses President Park of constitutional and legal violations, including allowing her confidant to interfere in state affairs and engage in influence peddling, as well as inadequate handling of the sinking of the ferry MV Sewol and possible corruption.
