Former Cuban President Fidel Castro died on Nov 25th at the age of 90. He was a legendary leader who toppled the American-friendly military dictatorship in Cuba and established the only Communist country in the western hemisphere. The CIA attempted to take him down 638 times without success. People in Havana and Miami had very different reactions towards his death. Fidel Castro graduated from the University of Havana's law school, but instead of becoming a lawyer, he joined the guerilla war to overturn the pro-American military dictator, Fulgencio Batista. In 1959, Castro founded the first and only Communist state in the western hemisphere, 145 km from Florida. His reign lasted through ten American presidents, and he survived 638 assassination attempts by the CIA. Castro is a self-proclaimed socialist and ruled Cuba as a strongman for half a century. His brother Raul Castro became the president in 2008, but Fidel Castro continued to publish his views on world politics in state media and also made a speech at Cuba's Communist Party Congress back in April. As news of Castro's death broke, across the ocean, crowds also gathered on the streets of Miami.
