President Tsai Ing-wen was interviewed by a Japanese media. She said recently China's pressure on Taiwan was obvious and she hoped that China would handle things more objectively. Tsai also said there were four things that she did not want to see happen including the fact that there would be no change to the status quo and Taiwan's attitude of goodwill towards China and that Taiwan would never cave under pressure and would not go back to an antagonistic situation against China. President Tsai Ing-wen admitted in an interview to Japanese media that Taiwan was feeling the effects of China's pressure on it and hoped that China would be more objective about cross-strait relations. She said she would patiently request communication with China. She further mentioned four points which expressed goodwill towards China. Taiwan will not change its commitment to maintain the status quo. The goodwill will not change. She hoped to solve cross-strait problems jointly. Taiwan would not yield under pressure and did not want to return to antagonistic relations. Facing interpellation by the Legislative Yuan, Premier Lin Chuan also said that cross-strait relations should be improved and the development of cross-strait relations cannot be framed with political prerequisites. ==LIN CHUAN Premier== we hope to see a change in cross-strait relations and this change will be constructed on a mutual basis of mutual goodwill, currently we hope that under the status quo we express our goodwill to China. During interpellation, the Kuomintang legislator Kong Wen-chi said that it was President Tsai's acknowledgment of the 1992 talks, but not the 1992 consensus, which had led to the current impasse in cross-strait relations. However, Lin said that the majority of Taiwanese did not want acknowledgement of the 1992 consensus. Overseas Community Affairs Minister Chang Hsiao-yue said that the population wanted peaceful and stable relations across the straits and it was China that was laying out prerequisites for this which was unacceptable to the Taiwanese people. ==CHANG HSIAO-YUE Overseas Community Affairs Minister== The current problem is that Beijing has given a political pre-requisite, which we can't accept, we want to maintain the status quo and there is no change in this. Lin emphasized that the Tsai administration hoped to establish a relationship of mutual goodwill for the development of cross-strait relations. With only Taiwan expressing goodwill on its side, there would be no improvement in cross-strait relations. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
