One man's trash is another man's treasure, or with Rick Kelly, a guitar. New Yorker Rick Kelly has used discarded lumber from buildings to make custom guitars over the past ten years. The late "Loo Reed" and Bob Dylan were all his clients. He continues to hunt for wood buildings in New York City because it is perfect for guitar-building. New Yorker Rick Kelly is sawing, routing and carving custom guitars from exclusive wood. He has made guitars for almost half a century. Over the last decade, he has used discarded lumber from New York City Landmark buildings, which he called "the bones of old New York", to make custom guitars. ==RICK KELLY, guitar maker== What these timbers have seen, they were here when George Washington was walking around these trees. They have gone through a lot of changes, all the buildings have, and what this wood sees is pretty amazing I am sure. Kelly started making this kind of guitar because his customer, film director Jim Jarmusch, offered wood from his loft ceiling back in 2006. Customers favored Kelly's peculiar choice of material. The late Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, who especially wanted a guitar made out of the old speakeasy bar Chumley's wood, were all his clients. The "Sound of New York" struck a chord in their hearts. ==RICHARD BIRCHARD, customer== That is fantastic, right next to my heart. I love old parts of New York, I do my own dumpster diving also, and when I first came in here and realized he did that, it made me love the story even that much more. Musicians have praised the warm sound of Kelly's instruments. Kelly said the guitars' uniqueness comes from the cured wood inside buildings, which is perfect for guitar-building. ==RICK KELLY, guitar maker== Because of the fact that they are old growth, but also because it's been endorsed for 150 years curing. And it's sort of this alchemy that happens especially in the roof area where it gets over 100 degrees (Fahrenheit), at night and then cool, I mean hot during the day and cool at night. It goes through this change, that sort of makes the wood really resonant, because the resin in the wood crystallizes, opens up the pores for vibration. Kelly's custom made guitars cost about US$2,000 to US $2,500 and are all made from reclaimed lumber. He continues to hunt for wood from hotels, churches and bars all over the city to make guitars.
