Visitors leave 2,000 tons of trash in Liouciou / 小琉球觀光熱潮 垃圾恐破2千公噸

發布時間: 更新時間:
Last year, four hundred thousand tourists visited Liouciou, and this year, the township office is expecting that tourists would leave after two thousand tons of trash. Recently, some visiting college students have found where all the problem started. The island simply does not have enough trash cans. ==Student== We hope to collect everyone's signature, and urge the township office to install more trash bins. Carrying boards and signs, these college students have been collecting signatures from tourists, urging the township office to set up more trash bins. ==TOURIST== At scenic area or in some streets, there are not enough trash bins. Maybe many people are not very conscious about littering. You see trash everywhere. It is unpleasant. These college students only stayed in Liouciou for a few days, but they found many trash in corners at every scenic area. The reason was that there were not enough trash bins. ==TSAI SHENG-JUNG, Student== If the trash was all gathered in one place, it would be easier to clean up. If there are no bins, trash is scattered everywhere, and that costs much more to clean up. This action earned support from tourists and residents. Some shop owners offered bottled water in appreciation. The students wrote a proposal indicating which places need trash bins and more cleaning. However, local residents want tourists to bring their own trash home. ==RESIDENT, Bed Breakfast Owner == We have an obligation to educate tourists, to tell them not to litter or to take their trash home, or put it in trash bins. For places without trash bins, then take the trash back to your Bed Breakfast. More tourists are visiting Liouciou during the summer vacation, and so there is more trash. The township office anticipates this year will be a record year for trash dumped on the island: over 2,000 tons of trash, a lot of trash for a small island. So, what is the solution? The authorities are still thinking about it.
