4 Teams Propose Design for Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
Four teams revealed their concepts about the transformation of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. As the Transitional Justice Commission's term will expire next month, it is hoped that the Executive Yuan can carry on the task to next step.
The design team explained the transformation direction of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. It proposed to build rockwork for landscaping and introduce facilities such as a children's playground and food and agriculture education fields to make the park more open space. The Transitional Justice Commission held an exhibition of Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall's redesign before the Commission's decommissioning in May this year. A total of four design teams proposed transformation ideas. The TJC believed that the establishment should be transformed into a democratic history museum to serve as a textbook for reflecting on authoritarianism. The biggest demand from the Taiwan Association for Care of Political Victims during the Martial Law Period is the removal of the Chiang Kai-shek bronze statue.
Tsai Kuan-yu, Honorary Chairperson, Taiwan Association for Care of Political Victims: “The statue should be removed. Even if the ruling party rotates in the future, the bronze statue is removed once and for all, and this issue will be solved.”
Yeh Hung-ling, Interim Commissioner, Transitional Justice Commission: “We hope that the memorial hall can serve as a historical reminder for both Taiwan and the international community of the experience of transforming from an undemocratic to a democratic country.”
The four design teams thought deeply about the transformation of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the most authoritative symbol in Taiwan. Their ideas included planting a large area of forest, transforming Chiang Kai-shek's bronze statue, or focusing on the needs of the younger generation, such as music studios. The common point of these ideas is to remove the authoritarian axis and create a public space that is suitable for everyone.
Chen Hsuan-cheng, Design Team: “After removing the bronze statue, we let this space become a cultural art space. And the space in the mountain is also for culture and art exhibitions.”
However, legislators believe that the transformation of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is slow. Various plans are currently empty talk without a concrete implementation. The TJC responded by saying the transformation of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a marathon relay. As the TJC's term comes to an end, it suggests passing the baton to the Executive Yuan's Transitional Justice Board to establish the Hall's transformation goals.
