Nicaragua announced that it recognized the one-China principle and terminated diplomatic ties with Taiwan. It then quickly resumed its relationship with China. This is the eighth country to sever diplomatic relations during the Tsai administration. At present, 14 countries are Taiwan's official diplomatic allies.
Denis Moncada, Foreign Affairs Minister, Nicaragua: “The People's Republic of China is the only legal government that represents the whole of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. The government of the Republic of Nicaragua severs diplomatic relations with Taiwan today.”
Nicaragua, ROC's diplomatic ally in Central America, suddenly announced the recognition of only one single China on the 10th and severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan. This is also the eighth country to sever diplomatic relations under the Tsai government after the Solomon Islands and Kiribati in 2019. At present, Taiwan has diplomatic relations with only 14 countries, including Palau and Nauru.
Joanne Ou, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Our government is very sad and regretful of Nicaragua's decision. To safeguard the sovereignty and dignity of our country, we will also cease diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua starting on December 10th today. We will completely stop bilateral cooperation projects and related assistance programs and will evacuate our embassy and technical team personnel.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also solemnly expressed its sadness and regret and immediately stopped bilateral cooperation and withdrew the embassy in Nicaragua. This is the second time that Nicaragua severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The first time was on December 17, 1985. Diplomatic relations were resumed in 1990. Both break-offs were 36 years apart and both were decided during the reign of President Daniel Ortega. President Tsai Ing-wen said that diplomatic pressure will not change Taiwan's determination to uphold democracy and freedom.
Tsai Ing-wen, President, ROC: “Whether it's diplomatic pressure or propaganda and military intimidation, we will not change our insistence on democracy and freedom. We will persist in determination and effort to reach out to the world and participate in the international, democratic community.”
Su Tseng-chang, Premier, ROC: “Everyone can see China has tried every means to isolate Taiwan. Our entire country must be united to not let Taiwan be isolated.”
Su criticized China for isolating Taiwan but at the same time, he saw democratic entities around the world increasingly supporting Taiwan. After Nicaragua announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, China quickly announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with Nicaragua.
China CCTV's Report: “China and Nicaragua signed this morning the People's Republic of China and Republic of Nicaragua joint communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations. ”
China's CCTV reported that China and Nicaragua had signed a joint communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations in Tianjin. This document mentions that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory and that Nicaragua promised not to have any official relationship with Taiwan.
