Deserted Factory Catches Fire in Yanshui, Tainan 鹽水廢棄工廠大火 廠內堆放大批泡棉.棉花

An abandoned furniture factory in Yanshui District of Tainan City caught on fire on the night of Dec. 27. Due to the large amount of polyurethane foams and cotton still stocked in the factory, the fire burned throughout the night and wasn't put out until 9am this morning. The Environmental Protection Bureau of Tainan City warned nearby residents of air pollution immediately.
Dark columns of smoke rise up into the air as the deserted factory got devoured by fire. Because there are many leftover polyurethane foams and cotton inside the building, the fire spread quickly and the whole factory covering an area of 300 pings was burning furiously by the time twenty fire trucks arrived. Firefighters all gathered on one side to spray water in hope to prevent the fire from spreading onto another factory that is just 100 meters away.

With all the polyurethane foams and cotton in the factory, I think it would take many hours before we can contain the fire.
Report came in on the night of the 27th at around 10pm, saying that fire is detected at Yanshui District in Tainan. Due to the wind, what started as a small-scale, sporadic fire, quickly spread to the factory close by and expanded into an area of 1000 square meters. Fortunately, the factory has been deserted for a while and no one got hurt. However, the thick smoke inevitably travelled in the direction toward which the wind is blowing to nearby areas. The Environmental Protection Bureau of Tainan City quickly sent out alerts in the middle of the night to 6 districts nearby including Yanshui District, to warn residents to stay indoors and to keep their windows shut.
At 1 am the PM2.5 level was 6 times above the normal range, and now the PM2.5 concentration has lowered to 37 micrograms which is 2 times above the normal range. It is not so bad at the point.
The fire finally got put out by 9am the next morning and the excavator is cleaning the dirt and debris left behind from the fire. Tainan City Environmental Protection Bureau said that the smoke is mainly affecting the Yanshui District and so far the PM2.5 concentration is still at an acceptable level. Although the furniture factory is no longer in use, officials are still penalizing the owner according to the Air Pollution Control Act.
暗夜裡，濃密黑煙竄升天際，眼前的這棟廢棄工廠，慘遭火舌吞噬，由於屋內堆放大批泡棉和棉花，20輛消防車抵達時，300坪的廠房已經全面燃燒，打火弟兄集中在一面布水線灌救，防止火勢延燒到距離100公尺外的另一廠房。
南市消防第一大隊大隊長 陳坤宗表示：「這個泡棉，還有棉花的成品、半成品很多啊！可能要再好幾個小時，才控制得住。」
27號晚上10點左右，台南市鹽水區，傳出雜草火警，疑似受到風勢助長，火勢延燒到緊鄰的這間廢棄工廠，初估燃燒面積約1000平方公尺，好在這座工廠，已經沒有營業，無人受困。但由於東北風，風勢助長下，濃煙往下風處擴散，台南市政府環保局派員警戒，並漏夜緊急發出，空汙事件通報，呼籲鄰近鹽水等6行政區鄉親，關緊門窗，盡量避免外出。
空氣及噪音管理科科長 楊朝全表示：「到凌晨1點的時候，比背景值，大概PM2.5高於6倍。那到目前，我們監測之後，整個背景值，PM2.5是37微克，比背景值高於2倍左右。目前的空氣品質，還算可以的。」
重回現場，火勢已在上午九點撲滅，怪手正在清理燃燒後的殘骸，經過一整夜的灌救，火已經控制。台南市環保局表示，火災濃煙影響的範圍，集中在鹽水地區，目前PM2.5監測值在接受範圍內。雖然家具工廠已經解散，但會對所有權人，依空汙法開罰。
