A mother and child were stuck in the ocean after the rising tide submerged the path back to the beach. Luckily they were rescued by firefighters and Coast Guard personnel.
Coast Guard personnel aboard a rubber raft mount a rescue to save a mother and her three-year-old child who had become stranded in an intertidal zone.
The pair were successfully brought back to shore. This incident occurred on the afternoon of Aug. 25. The 35-year-old mother surnamed Hung had taken her son by motorbike to play on a beach in Changhua County's Shengang Township. They failed to notice the rising tide, and by the time they noticed the water, the path back to the beach was already submerged.
They were trapped in the ocean, so we immediately dispatched a vessel to save them. It took about half an hour to bring the pair back to shore.
This was the first such incident in the intertidal zone since the start of the summer vacation. In the past, there were numerous incidents of anglers or tourists getting trapped in the water. The primary reason is the special topography of the region. During times of high tide, the seawater will first submerge a pathway used for gathering oysters. By the time people realize the pathway has been submerged, it's already too late.
The intertidal zone in Shengang Township is about three to four kilometers long. There is an oyster gathering pathway in the middle. Some people drive here to come play in the water. When the tide rises, the seawater will come in from the left and right. You're right in the middle playing in the water, so you won't realize the tide has risen, so this is especially dangerous.
Changhua County's Fire Bureau says there were numerous incidents in the past but in recent years, firefighters and Coast Guard personnel have stepped up supervision by placing warning signs and urging people to leave before the tide rises. The number of incidents has therefore fallen to a single digit. The public is reminded to pay attention to their surroundings and not put themselves at risk.
