The Taiwan People's Party surprised everyone on the final day of registration for the Kaohsiung City mayoral by-election as it nominated People First Party city councilor Wu Yi-jheng. Wu says he decided to join forces with the TPP because he has been angry with the lack of support from the Kuomintang. The Democratic Progressive Party's Chen Chi-mai and the KMT's Li Mei-jhen both registered in the morning.
Kaohsiung City Councilor Wu Yi-jheng of the People First Party registered as the Taiwan People's Party candidate in the Kaohsiung City mayor by-election on the 24th. TPP lawmakers Tsai Pi-ru and Jang Chyi-lu were on hand to show their support. Wu says he accepted the TPP's offer because of his anger with the Kuomintang for refusing to work with other parties. Asked if he would give up his council seat, Wu replied:
If a consensus is reached, legislation occurs and the Legislative Yuan can pass the bill in a week. If it passes, I will resign immediately.
Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Chi-mai also registered on the 24th with a crowd of supporters in tow.

Asked how he sees the breakdown of the blue-white coalition, Chen said you can't force two parties to work together when they don't want to.
The KMT and TPP have their own nominees. They can both come up with good policies, so it's a good thing.
The Kuomintang's candidate, Li Mei-jhen, also registered on the 24th. Li served three terms as city councilor and is the daughter of a former city councilor. She is currently the president of Kaohsiung Fruit and Vegetable Marketing Co. and has a large grassroots support base that transcends party boundaries.
This is the first time in 40 years the KMT has nominated a young, local candidate for Kaohsiung. The party has my support.
Voters will head to the polls on Aug. 15.
民眾黨籍立委蔡璧如、張其祿一大早南下，等在高雄選委會門口，陪同親民黨籍高雄市議員吳益政登記，吳益政坦言接受民眾黨徵召參選，是對於國民黨在野第一大黨姿態，不願藍白合作讓他很生氣，至於會不會辭去議員職務，回得很直接。
民眾黨高雄市長補選參選人 吳益政表示：「大家有建立一個共識的話，那就是立法，那你立法院，很快一個禮拜就可以通過，它通過我就馬上辭。」
而提前起跑的民進黨參選人陳其邁，也在黨籍議員及支持者簇擁下來登記。
「陳其邁，你是我的菜！」
陳其邁穿著白襯衫，面帶微笑，被問到怎麼看藍白合破局，表示不合就不應該勉強。
民進黨高雄市長補選參選人 陳其邁表示：「國民黨、民眾黨，他們有他們的候選人，那能夠也提出好的政策，那我覺得這樣也是好事。」
選在最後一天參選的，還有國民黨推派的李眉蓁，有三屆市議員從政資歷，父親李榮宗曾任高雄市議員，現為高雄果菜市場總經理，人脈橫跨藍綠，被視為地方基層實力雄厚。
國民黨高雄市長補選參選人 李眉蓁表示：「40年以來，高雄國民黨，從來沒有提過在地年輕的，這次國民黨做到了，我也很認同我們的中央。」
高雄市長補選倒數50天，最後衝剌，誰能獲得選民親睞，很快就能分曉。
