The union of Fuji Xerox Taiwan staged a strike to protest the company's decision to lay off employees worldwide. One third of the workforce in Taiwan might be affected. The situation turned out-of-control when confrontations broke out at the picket line, and several staff members suffered injuries. The union has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to voice their concerns on the matter.
Members of the union are pushed and shoved to different directions. The union of Fuji Xerox Taiwan Corporation has staged a strike and has blocked access to the sixth and seventh floor of the company's headquarter building on Dunhua North road. By the evening, however, the picket line was broken through, and several people were injured during confrontation.
The senior officials, HR managers and security personnel have resorted to choking and pushing, and they pushed members of the union on the ground before stepping on them.
The company responded to the incident, saying that they are sorry that confrontations broke out at the stake amidst heightened tension, and that they will try to avoid similar incidents in the future. Fuji Xerox announced plans to lay off employees in branches worldwide, and around 300 employees in Taiwan will be affected, accounting for one third of the total employees in the local branch. The news has affected employees of all levels and departments, including head of technical departments, engineers and warehouse staff members. The employees staged a strike to demand the company to promise not to lay off any staff.
Most of the employees have worked here for more than 25 years. Take me as an example, I've worked here for 28 years. We're like a family here, and most of us are the main financial income of our families. The layoff plan will heavily affect our life and career plans.
The union has come to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit an official letter, asking for the ministry to step in to help since the Japanese headquarters cannot be reached to resolve the matter.
It is the responsibility of us in the government to help Taiwan's employees. We at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs do not know if we can take concrete actions. Since the incident falls within realm of labor standards, we will communicate with the Ministry of Labor to clarify the legal matters first.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accepted the letter from the union, but said it will refer it to the Ministry of Labor. No progress is made between the two sides on the second day of the strike.
