And at an event yesterday commemorating the 30th anniversary of the lifting of the martial law, Minister of Culture Cheng Li Jun praised Liu Xiaobo for having planted the seeds of freedom in China. Strings played Schindler's List, Hoping for Early Return and Island's Sunrise, the music expressed the political persecution dissidents and families suffered during the white terror era. On July 15, 1987, Taiwan lifted its 38-year long martial law. Culture Minister Cheng paid tributes to the victims and their families in the commemoration, she reiterated the importance of transitional justice. ==CHENG LI-CHIUN Minister of Culture== The sufferings which victims of political persecution received, how do we console, redress, and compensate. Therefore transitional justice, in my opinion, is a democracy lesson which Taiwan society needs to relearn. This is a class we need to retake In the commemoration for the 30th anniversary of the ending of martial law, Chinese dissident Liu Xiao-bo died from imprisonment. Minister Cheng and scholar Chen Yi-shen praised for Liu's courage. ==CHENG LI-CHIUN Minister of Culture== Today we also hail to those Chinese friends, who are pursuing for democracy and freedom. I believe Mr. Liu Xiao-bo had already planted seeds of freedom in Chinese soil. ==CHEN YI-SHEN Scholar== Mr. Liu Xiao-bo, unfortunately had lived under one-party dominance. Our Taiwan experience tells whole Chinese population that democracy did not just drop off from sky. Do not believe human rights exist under one-party dominance. President Tsai Ing-wen posted in her facebook two black-and-white photos depicting 519 Green Action crowds in 1980s demanded for ending martial law. President Tsai wrote: "Thirty years ago today, Taiwan finally freed from a long 38-year political persecution by Kuomingtang (KMT) and made an important step toward freedom and democracy." President Tsai hopes that all political parties take stance of Taiwan subjectivity and reflect on Taiwan's future.
