FIRST CASE OF H7N9 WITHIN TAIWAN SUCCUMBS|台商染H7N9搶救27天不治 首例國人死亡

A 69-year old Taiwan business person who contracted the H7N9 virus in China last month passed away yesterday after 27 days of close medical attention. [J] The Centers for Disease Control confirmed the death as the first FROM H7N9 among Taiwanese nationals, and the second in Taiwan. In 2014, an 86 year old Chinese man died of the virus after entering Taiwan. The first confirmed death from the H7N9 virus within Taiwan, is that of a 69 year old man who contracted the virus whilst in China. He returned to Taiwan from Guangdong with symptoms including a fever and lung infection and sought hospital treatment. Three days after treatment started it was confirmed that he had H7N9. Although anti-viral medication, and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation were used in his treatment, his condition steadily worsened and he succumbed on Feb. 27. He is the fifth person to enter Taiwan with the virus, and the first Taiwanese death from it. ==LUO YI-JUN Dir-Gen. CDC== When he was over 60 he had high blood pressure, he had a serious lung infection, sustained high oxygen content and so on these risk factors are known in medical literature to be associated with a high risk of mortality in H7N9. The CDC said the first case of H7N9 was an 86 year old Chinese who died in 2014. The most recent Taiwanese case had a history of high blood pressure and during treatment which included ECMO and anti-viral drugs, he had an adverse reaction to the anti-virals. Although new anti-virals were imported specially from Japan for him, in the end he died from multiple organ failure. The CDC emphasized that recently China announced a 40 percent death rate from H7N9, however, one third of the cases had no hsitory of contact with poultry, therefore it is probable that disease was transmitted from general environmental contamination. ==LUO YI-JUN Dir-Gen. CDC== From the figures that China announced this year, the death rate is about 40 percent. Whether this is due to of H7N9 suddenly becoming more easily transmissable, or because it is a more lethal strain, needs continued monitoring. The CDC said that it is the high season for H7N9 in China, and anyone traveling there should take extra precautions against infection, such as frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with poultry, and thoroughly cooking duck, goose and chicken eggs.
