Meanwhile, a huge forest fire since Saturday in central Portugal has killed at least 62 people and injured more than 50. Many of them were caught in their cars as they tried to flee.
Dozens of burnt-out cars line the roadside in Pedrogao Grande, a mountainous region about 200 km northeast of Lisbon. More than 600 firefighters continue to battle the flames. Authorities say the fire was possibly caused by a lightening strike on a tree, but evacuation and efforts to warn the public have been hindered as fire got to the phone lines and communications towers. Many have complained of being left to their own devices. The Portuguese government declared three days of mourning and sent two army battalions to help the emergency services. The European Union said it would provide firefighting aircraft. Speaking in the Vatican, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to those who have been affected by the fire.
