The two-day G7 summit concluded in Sicily on May 27. Participating countries issued a joint communiqué reaffirming the group's commitment on several fronts. The block pledges to keep their markets open, fight protectionism, and exert greater pressure on North Korea.
In his first G7 Summit, US President Donald Trump held divisive views against the G6 leaders on trade and climate issues, putting America first at the G7. The group's commitment to keep their markets open, fight protectionism, and stand against unfair trade practices was reiterated in the six-page-long joint communiqué, which was considerably shorter than last year's. On the climate issue, the communiqué specified that the US was unable to join the other countries in committing to the Paris Agreement as it was still in the process of reviewing its policies. President Trump tweeted that he will make the final decision on Paris Agreement next week.
==JUSTIN TRUDEAU, Prime Minister, Canada==
We listened to each other. We engaged robustly. It is explicitly written in the communiqué that we respect President Trump's choice to reflect further on their engagements around climate change in the Paris Accords.
Italy's call for more ways to stem the flow of refugees and the participation of five African leaders in the discussion did not receive the due response from other members. The communiqué also reiterated its opposition to the militarization of disputed features in the South and East China Sea. The group also recognized that greater pressure must be exerted to North Korea until it drops all of its nuclear programs.
==SHINZO ABE Japanese Prime Minister==
North Korea must immediately and fully abandon all nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
During the summit, anarchists, communists, and anti-globalization activists clashed with the police, who then deployed tear gas at the protesters.
