President makes historic apology to indigenous people / 原住民正名紀念日 總統代表政府道歉　　　　　　　　　　

Yesterday was the first Indigenous People's Day ever celebrated in Taiwan, and President Tsai formally apologized to all indigenous peoples at the Presidential Office on behalf of the government before putting forward three major policy goals. ==R.O.C. President TSAI ING-WEN== On behalf of the government, I apologize sincerely to all indigenous people. For the past four hundred years of pain and unfair treatment you all have endured, I apologize to you all, on behalf of government. President Tsai says foreign political regimes used military force to infringe on the rights of indigenous peoples so that they lost their rights to self-determination and self-government. The newer immigrants used their own biased perspective to document history, and were passive in upholding the rights of indigenous cultures. President Tsai also apologized for not paying sufficient attention to setting an indigenous peoples' basic law. President Tsai pointed out former political regimes tried to exterminate the Pingpu tribes, and she also apologized to the Yami tribe for storing nuclear waste on Orchid Island. The 80-year-old Yami representative requested the government to relocate nuclear waste out of Orchid Island. ==CAPEN NGANAEN, Yami Representative== I urge everyone to think, and our people at Orchid Island to think, how to relocate nuclear waste out of Orchid Island. President Tsai apologized ten times in her speech, and said the government will set up an Indigenous Historical Justice and Transitional Justice Commission. ==R.O.C. President TSAI ING-WEN == The Presidential Office will set up Indigenous Historical Justice and Transitional Justice Commission. As the Head of State, I will lead the Commission. Together with representatives from each tribe, we will pursue historical justice, and to coordinate perspectives on policy directions. President requests the Executive Yuan to convene regularly the Indigenous Peoples Basic Law Promotion Committee, and to set up an Indigenous Legal Service Center with a high degree of cultural sensitivity, to reduce the growing clashes between indigenous customs and modern laws. The government would also provide the Yami tribe appropriate compensation for the nuclear waste storage. The Pingpu ethnic group's self-identity will be examined before September 30th and they will receive their rights and status. On November 1st, the government will announce indigenous traditional territories and lands. The proposals of indigenous self-government will be submitted for legislature reviews.
