Public Reminded About Water Safety|暑假戲水旺季 亦為溺水意外高峰期

發布時間: 更新時間:

Summer is the time when people tend to play in the water, and subsequently it is also the time when most drowning incidents occur. To help prevention, authorities reminds the public to ensure that the water play areas they attend are legal, and to check if they have lifeguards and lifesaving facilities. People should also warm up before going into the water and refrain from dangerous actions.

Many people go to swimming pools, rivers and beaches in the summer to play in the water and cool off. They are reminded to pay attention to their personal safety at these places.

You shouldn't wear jeans into the water, and you should also warm up before entering the water.

There should be lifeguards on duty.

Many teachers reminded their students about water safety prior to the start of the summer vacation. This is because summer is the peak period for drowning incidents. Ministry of Education statistics show the number of drowning incidents occurring in the July to August period accounts for around 40 percent of annual incidents. In 2017, there were 26 drowning incidents, and 11 of them occurred during the summer. In 2016, 11 of the 22 drowning incidents took place during the summer. There were several drowning cases involving young children just last week. The public is reminded to observe weather conditions, determine if the water play area is legal and refrain from dangerous behavior such as jumping in the water.

Many drowning incidents occur at rivers, ponds and swimming pools, because they may not have protective fences. Children can accidentally fall in. The floating position we just mentioned is very simple. When children fall into the water, they will naturally flip over and assume this face-up floating position.

The Swimming Teachers Association of Taiwan says the majority of drowning accidents occur in open water. Children should be proficient at swimming and familiarize themselves with the environment before entering the water, so they will be more likely to remain calm should an accident occur.
