Many cosmetic clinics use propofol as anesthesia, and the usage has led to many accidents. The Ministry of Health and Welfare said that Propofol is a controlled substance and must be administered by trained medical professionals.
Many cosmetics surgeries require patients to be under general anesthesia. Many cosmetic clinics use propofol injection and has caused many accidents where the patients fall into a coma or even death. Propofol is also the chemical that caused the death of pop icon Michael Jackson. In order to prevent the abuse of such substance, propofol has been listed as a level-4 drug and control substance since 2015. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, however, the use of propofol has grown by 150 percent since, the cosmetic clinic saw the most increase at 160 percent, followed by dental clinics.
(The use of propofol) saw massive growth in dental clinics. Many of its medical staff do need to have the drug ready just in case. However, it must be administered by trained and certified medical experts.
The Food and Drug Administration said that more and more cosmetic and dental clinics are using propofol as anesthesia prior to surgeries. However, many doctors said the drug carries inherent risks.
The drug is highly effective. A small dose would relax the patients. And if the dosage is increased, it could lead to deeper stage of unconsciousness. No one is certain about when the patient's breathing could be inhibited, since every patient's tolerance is different.
A patient could fall completely unconscious two minutes after propofol is administered. However, the side effects of the drug also include the lowering of blood pressure, and temporarily inhibited breathing. Therefore, it is paramount for the public to choose medical clinics with professional staff and adequate emergency rescue equipment in order to ensure one's safety.
