The first public hearing out of 5 as requested by lawmakers to review the government's newly implemented labor policies took place yesterday. Minister of Labor Lin Mei-chu stresses that the government simply wants to hear more from different stockholders, but labor groups suspect that the hearings are a prelude to a new round of amendments aimed at benefiting employers. Outside the public hearing on labor issues, labor groups protested that the labor law amendment had just entered the investigation of its implementation stage but the government already wanted to change it in favor of employers. ==PROTESTORS== Employers' flexibility is workers' hell. Ever since the labor law amendment was implemented, it has been unpopular. The Legislative Yuan's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee requested the Ministry of Labor to hold public hearings on this and other labor issues before the next legislative session. The first was held on July 18. Most participants were labor group representatives who all opposed the any further amendment to the new labor law amendment. ==HUANG SUNG-JU Trade Union of electrical electronic and information in Taiwan== Our work hours are the fourth highest in the world, why would we want to amend them now, so that employers can be flexible? so that they can add to worker's hours? ==HSIEH I-HUNG No High Tuition Alliance== Amend the law so that we have seven days national holiday again, no need to keep on lying, the work hours bank, real calculation of overtime hours, or lengthening holidays, deferring special leave, these issues continue to deteriorate the job market that our youth are entering and the whole labor market. After the labor representatives took their turn to speak, the employers started but were cut off by heckling. ==HUA CHING-CHI Chinese National Federation of Industries representative== If our business gets short lead time orders or when it's high season, I have 46 hours of overtime at the most, so do I dare to take on that order? if I can't finish it, in that sort of situation my international competitiveness is gone and then there's no opportunity for any extra pay for anyone. ==NS== Give back our seven days' national holiday! These officials keep telling us having one day a week off and one flexible day off is so good. Minister of Labor, Lin Mei-chu said she has no intention of amending the law again but just wants to hear reactions. She quoted President Tsai's recent words that amending the labor law is complex and after looking at it three times herself she still did not understand it. ==LIN MEI-CHU Minister of Labor== Technical industries have their professional requirements, so I think there are some articles which are a little complicated, but after lots of explanation with people who have used them long term, there shouldn't be any areas which are misunderstood. During the meeting, many labor union representatives said that the labor law had cut seven days' holiday to give them one day off a week, with one flexible day off, thus employers saved NT$6.30 billion a year in overtime pay for holidays, so they refused to accept any more changes to the law or else they would hold a large scale protest.
