Roger Moore, the star of seven James Bond films over 12 years, has died in Switzerland, aged 89. Born in London, the only child of a policeman, Moore worked briefly in an art studio and then as a film extra. He went to drama school for a few terms, but dropped out as he could not afford it.
Moore went to the US in 1952 where he was sent to a dialogue coach to lose his cockney accent. Moore had success in several TV series in the 1950s-60s including "Maverick". In England, he had a long-running TV hit with "The Saint", playing Simon Templar, who helps catch wealthy crooks but takes their money. Moore landed the role of 007 in 1973 with his first Bond film, "Live and Let Die". He made seven Bond movies over 12 years and retired from the role at 57. After filming in India and seeing children in poverty, Moore became a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in 1991, having been introduced to the role by the late actress Audrey Hepburn. He often said that this was the role that he was most proud of. Moore was married four times and leaves three children.
