It has now been four days since dioxide contamination was found in egg samples from Changhua. Food and Drug Administration Director-General Wu Shou-Mei has now made a personal media appearance to comment on the issue. She said that the FDA, the Council of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Administration are still investigating the source of the contamination, and that 7,744 kilograms of eggs have been recalled from store shelves as of noon on Apr. 24. Wu emphasized that in the future, dioxin testing will be required for eggs to receive the Certified Agricultural Standards, or CAS, certification. The source for the current contamination could be known as early as Friday. Four days after dioxin contamination was found in eggs in stores, FDA Director-General Wu Shou-mei held a press conference emphasizing that store-bought eggs remain safe to eat. She said that the FDA, the Council of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Administration are still investigating the source of the contamination, and that 7,744 kilograms of eggs have been recalled as of noon on Apr. 24. It was also announced that CAS certification will require dioxin testing in the future. ==WU SHOU-MEI Dir.-Gen., Food and Drug Administration== We have always conducted (random monitoring inspections) all across Taiwan. It was only this time that we saw concentrations above safety standards. ==WANG CHUNG-SHU Dep. Dir., Dept. Animal Industry, COA== There is much public concern on the issue, and the COA is considering immediately making dioxin testing a requirement for CAS certification for eggs. The FDA said that about 140,000 eggs have been recalled from stores, but the general public remains wary regarding the safety of eggs. Dr. Chiang Chih-kang, a kidney specialist at NTU Hospital, said that at the dioxin concentration of 5.2 picograms per gram of fat found in the current scandal, an adult or a child will need to eat at least 5 eggs a day for a health risk to be posed. ==DR. CHIANG CHIH-KANG Dept. of Nephrology, NTU== In general, as long as you don't eat over 5 a day, the current average of 3-5 eggs a day is still acceptable. But the extremes are more concerning. The FDA said that environmental measurements regarding air, water, and soil pollution have been taken from the 9 suspected egg farms, and samples have also been taken of the chicken feed. The results of the investigation could be known as early as Friday.
