Judicial Yuan and grand justice positions all approved / 許蔡配.5大法官被提名人 通順利過關　　　　　　　　　　

On Oct. 25, the Legislative Yuan passed the nominations for the Judicial Yuan president, vice president and five grand justices. There was some dispute around the legality of the nomination of Hsu Tzong-li as Judicial Yuan president, due to his previous service as a grand justice, which the constitution prohibits. However, the ruling party's superior numbers won the day and all nominations were approved. On Oct. 25 the nomination for Judicial Yuan President, Hsu Tzong-li was approved by 72 votes to 3. As the voting started there was a protest against the nominations by KMT legislators saying that Hsu's nomination violated the constitution. This is because the constitution stipulates that a grand justice can serve only one eight-year term and cannot be re-elected. Hsu served as a grand justice from 2003 to 2011, so the opposition party says it would be unconstitutional for him to serve as Judicial Yuan president, as the role involves simultaneous service as a grand justice. KMT Legislator Lin Wei-chou wrote his opposition to the nomination on his ballot paper to represent the KMT caucus' opinion. As the Democratic Progressive Party has superior numbers in the Legislative Yuan, the nomination was passed, as was Tsai Chiung-tun as Vice President of the Judicial Yuan. ==HSU TZONG-LI newly-appointed Judicial Yuan President== I want to thank the President for nominating me and thank the legislators for supporting my nomination. A lot of people have raised criticisms and comments and I thank them for all of these. Subsequently the five grand justice nominations were voted upon and passed. The only female justice nomination, Chang Chiong-wen, was approved by 94 votes. ==HUANG WEI-CHIH DPP caucus dep. convenor== There was a high level of consensus on the President and Vice President of the Judicial Yuan and the caucus did not mandate the decision. ==KMT caucus convenor LIAO KUO-TUNG== During the review of the Judicial Yuan President nomination, the candidates offered were Hsu Tsong-li, Huang Jui-ming, Hsu Chih-Hsiung and Huang Chao-yuan. It was a cynical negation of the constitution. The Presidential Office issued a statement thanking legislators for their support of the nominations and looking forward to the newly appointed justices taking up their roles guardians of the constitution and defenders of human rights.
