Tax season is here again. There has been a new deduction added this year - a standard living expense deduction. It should enable taxpayers to save some money.

Labor Day coincided with the first day of tax season. Many people used their day off to line up at the tax bureau, only to find the ID system was malfunctioning. Some had to wait for over an hour.

This year's individual deduction has increased from NT$83,000 to NT$88,000 due to inflation and new laws. There is also a new standard living expense deduction of NT$16,600. Under the old system, a family of five would have individual deductions of NT$440,000, a standard deduction of NT$180,000, and a special wage income deduction of NT$12,800 for total deductions of NT$748,000. With the new standard living expense deduction, the family's total deductions would increase to NT$830,000, a difference of NT$82,000.

The new deduction is aimed at easing the economic burden of families with few income earners and many dependents. The last day to pay taxes is May 31. The National Tax Administration is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Business hours will be extended to 7 p.m. on the 31st. Taxes can also be filed online.
