Van Attack in Toronto Killed 10 and Injured 15|廂型車高速衝撞 加拿大多倫多10死15傷

A tragedy has happened in Toronto. A van plowed through a busy street downtown killing10 pedestrians and injuring at least 15 others. The 25-year old driver has been apprehended and the Canadian police is investigating his motivation.


At about 1:30 pm local time, a rental van mounted the curb on Yonge Street between Finch Avenue and Sheppard Avenue and drove south into a number of pedestrians for 1.6 kilometers. Several were killed and injured. The police intercepted the vehicle a few blocks down the road and apprehended the driver. Their initial investigations rules out the possibility of this being a terrorist attack.

Events that happened on the street behind us are horrendous. But they do not appear to be connected, in anyway, to national security, based on the information available at this time.

The police has revealed the identity of the suspect without publishing his photograph. The 25-year old Alek Minassian is rumored to be a university student. The police is currently investigating the suspect's motivation and trying to find out whether the incident was a premeditated attack. The incident caused many deaths and at least 15 injured, of which a few are elderly. Two died on the way to the hospital, and several others died at the hospital. The witnesses said that the van was traveling at speeds faster than 40 kilometers per hour and the attack on pedestrians was horrendous. Toronto Mayor John Tory said this incident was a tragedy. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent his condolences to the victims' families.

Cabinet ministers from the G7 countries were gathered for a meeting in a hotel nearby when the attack took place. However, the security level had not been raised. In recent years, similar attacks had taken place in several European cities, such as Berlin, Barcelona, London, and Venice, as well as in New York and Las Vegas in the United States. The use of civilian vehicle makes this kind of attack difficult to prevent by the police.
