Two police officers were killed by a truck after they pulled over cars on the national highway on April 23. Scholars called on the government to use technology to enforce traffic laws so officers won't be at such a risk on the highway.

Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong visited the family members of the two deceased police officers and promised to do his best to take care of their affairs. Yeh also commented on the safety challenges facing police officers every day. He said he will speak with the Ministry of Transportation and discuss the possibility of using technology to reduce hazards.
We deemed the accident a case of occupational fatality. We wonder how we can use technology to adjust the duties of highway patrol officers.

Currently, cameras are installed in the Hsuehshan Tunnel and in the section through Linkou District of the National Highway to enforce speed limits. The scholars have called on the government to reduce the chances of police officers standing along the highway to minimize the risks they face.

We don't want police officers to stand along the highway (to carry out patrol duties) since drivers could easily be attracted by stationary objects on the roads which will increase the chance of collision.

The scholars said that the electronic toll collection (ETC) can also double as speed cameras to monitor the speed of vehicles on the highway. However, the Freeway Bureau said that the current law will have to be amended to allow the use of technology as speed cameras.
