PREMIER URGES TO REVIEW UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS' SALARY PACKAGES|

Facing low salary and the pension reform that will reduce their pension packages, many university professors are likely to seek better job opportunities overseas. Premier Lin Chuan has ordered a task force to be established to review and increase salary packages for university professors. As later retirement and smaller pension packages for professors in public universities may drive them overseas for better job opportunities, Premier Lin Chuan has established a task force to tackle this problem. ==CHEN KUEN-YUAN Department of Personnel Director, Ministry of Education== There will be two main directions. One will focus on flexibility, which means more flexibility and longer terms for short-term or specific personnel. Premier Lin also hoped to adjust the salary structure for university professors, but no concrete plans have been proposed. Some universities believe that the approach is viable. ==WU CHENG-CHIH Vice President, National Taiwan Normal University == I think it's a good idea. It's the way it's supposed to be. If you want to increase competitiveness, you need to make reference to the US, European countries, or nearby countries. According to Vice President Wu, the salary for professors in Taiwan is already lower than other Asian countries, so it will be a bigger challenge to retain talents after the new pension scheme kicks off. Some have criticized the government's approach. ==LEE CHIA-TUNG, Scholar== These two things are going against each other. The reason why the government slashed pension plans was that it ran out of money. How will it be able to fund itself to raise the salary? ==LEE MING Professor, National Tsing Hua University== After you've done some research and proposed a plan, the Legislative Yuan will go through discussions for God knows how long. During this time, many talents in universities may have already got better positions abroad. Scholars believed that incentives must be put in place to retain talents, and raising the competitiveness for Taiwan's higher education is an urgent priority. Translated By LUKE CHIANG
