TAICHUNG MRT SYSTEM TO BE EXTENDED TO CHANGHUA|中捷綠線將延伸到彰化市區 列"前瞻"計畫

President Tsai Ing-wen confirmed that the Green Line of Taichung's Metro system will extend to Changhua City as a project under the Executive Yuan's Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program. Many are surprised by President Tsai's announcement, but not including Changhua County Magistrate Wei Ming-ku, who siad he would urge that the MRT system be further extended to Lukang. However, scholars worried that the demand for public transport in Changhua will drop as its population decreases, and, the project could create a financial burden to the government. ==TSAI ING-WEN President == We are here to make an announcement to the people in Changhua. Changhua will soon be served by the MRT system. On April 14, President Tsai Ing-wen announced that Taichung's Metro system will extend to Changhua City as part of a government program. Changhua County Magistrate Wei Ming-ku stated that he will continue to pledge for further extension to Hemei and Lukang. ==member of the public== I think this will bring more business opportunity to the city. It will also be more convenient and faster for us to get to Taichung. ==member of public== It will be convenient for people traveling back and forth between Taichung and Changhua. With the MRT system, there's no need to drive. It will also ease the traffic. Many people in Changhua believe that the MRT extension will promote development in Changhua. However, public transport in Changhua remains low. As the population decreases, the county government should think about how to promote public transport use instead of pushing for the MRT extension. ==LEE KER-TSUNG asst. prof. TTM Dept., Feng Chia University== Public transport use in Changhua remains relatively low. With a decreasing population and aging society, we can expect the demand to decrease. All these must be factored into the evaluation and analysis as they are very important factors. Professor Lee suggests that local governments include a supply-demand analysis and a plan for sustainable operation as they vie for funds from the Forward-looking Program; otherwise, the future fiscal burden might be too large to overcome.
