RETIRED POLITICIANS, MAY SEE THEIR PENSIONS CUT|政務官退撫替代率擬砍半 月退最多18萬

The Ministry of Civil Service under the Examination Yuan has proposed an amendment to the act regarding retired political officials. According to the proposal, Taiwan's former Vice-President would be paid no more than NT$180,000 per month. Currently, former Vice-President Lien Chan is the only person who will be affected his pension would be heavily slashed if the amendment is passed. Lien's office criticized the move as being politically-motivated. The Ministry of Civil Service under the Examination Yuan has proposed the amendment bill to the policy on retired political officials. The former Vice-President's pension is lucrative because there was no clear rule on the pay and benefits in the past and the pension is calculated based on the same standard as professionals from other fields. The amendment bill adds a ceiling to the former Vice President's monthly pension, which is NT$180,000. Some have called the bill "Lien-Chan clause" since Lien Chan is the only person affected by it. ==LIN WEN-TSAN Political Deputy Minister, Ministry of Civil Service== There used to be policy regarding retired President's pay and benefits, but there was no such thing on retired Vice President. The policy for VP was then amended based on the same procedure. The President or Vice President, whether they are retired or not, should be applicable to the same standard. Regarding the draft bill, Lien's office criticized it for smearing Lien Chang, calling it politically-motivated. ==TING YUAN-CHAO director, Lien Chan's office== Today, everything we do has to be based on rationality and most importantly, legitimacy. In other words, if what we do is not legitimate, then on one will not approve of it. KMT legislators criticized the bill for lack of communication while the DPP legislators thought it necessary to discuss the whole pension system. ==TSENG MING-TSUNG KMT legislator== The pension reform is necessary and reasonable. However, if it only targets at one specific person, then I don't think it is appropriate. ==LO CHIH-CHENG DPP legislator== Lien is not an isolated case. Whether in the future or in the past, anyone who falls into that category will be applicable to the pension reform. Lien Chan's office emphasized that his monthly pension is legitimate. However, there is much speculation on the amount of his monthly pension. The number is going to be no more than NT$180,000 per month once the bill is passed.
