Morris Chang Talks With CBS 60 Minutes

Regarding the tension in Taiwan Strait, TSMC founder Morris Chang shared his views on a CBS program, saying that China would perhaps refrain from attacking if economic well-being is considered.

CBS News' 60 Minutes polls showed that a majority of Taiwanese think that China would not be invading Taiwan any time soon, and a big reason for that line of thinking comes from Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Many people in Taiwan feel that the TSMC chips would protect them from the attack. What if China's priority is to nationalize the company? TSMC founder Morris Chang said that if the war does happen, everything would be destroyed, but perhaps China would refrain from attacking for economic concerns.

Morris Chang, Founder, TSMC: “Because our company provides a lot of chips to the world, maybe somebody will refrain from attacking it. If that person's priority is for economic well-being, I think they will refrain from attacking. ”

Lee Hsi-ming, Former Chief of the General Staff Admiral: “This is not a matter of if they will invade, it's a matter of when they will invade.”

Admiral Lee Hsi-min, who used to head Taiwan's armed forces, told 60 Minutes that the government should buy smaller portable missiles like stingers, javelins, and drones for asymmetric warfare, instead of buying heavy weapons systems from the U.S. Lee thinks Taiwan should follow the Ukrainians in the creation of a volunteer army. Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen received a Canadian cross-party delegation led by Judy Sgro on the 11th. This is the first Canadian parliamentary delegation to visit Taiwan since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic over two years ago. President Tsai expressed her gratitude towards Canada for speaking out in defense of Taiwan during China's military drills around Taiwan in August.

Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan: “Canada's warships then passed through the Taiwan Strait in September as part of a routine Taiwan Strait transit to demonstrate their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. ”

Judy Sgro, Chairperson, Canada Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group: “I am confident as we move forward, we will have more opportunities as we work on the Indo-Pacific strategy. ”

Besides regional safety issues, Tsai also called on Canada to back Taiwan's inclusion in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Sgro said Taiwan's inclusion in CPTPP would greatly benefit bilateral trade relations between Taiwan and Canada and she would continue to work on deepening Taiwan-Canada relations. Sgro also expressed her love for Taiwan and praised the Double Ten celebration performances during the visit.
