A man was fined NT$900 by police officers from Kaohsiung's Shou Tian Police Station on Sept. 14 for exceeding road markings. He then posted online about how he managed to convince the police to reduce the fine from NT$40,000 to NT$900 even though his truck was overloaded. The police responded that it handled everything according to law and the man also admitted he embellished his story. He will be investigated for offenses against reputation and credit.

A concrete truck exceeds road markings at an intersection in Kaohsiung, and is flagged by the police. The police officer issues a fine. The truck driver subsequently posted a photo of the fine notice on Facebook and boasted about how he managed to convince the police to reduce the fine from NT$40,000 for an overloaded vehicle to NT$900 for failing to comply with traffic signals, saving him NT$31,000. His post became viral and the police were accused of dereliction of duty.

Cheng Chuan-shun, Captain, Shou Tian Police Station: “A visual assessment showed that the vehicle in question was not overloaded, and its tires were not sunken. That's why he was only penalized for exceeding road markings.”

The police station named in the post offered a clarification. It said the police officer at the scene determined the vehicle was not overloaded after the driver was flagged. The man embellished his story and also posted a photo of the fine, which showed the name and position of the police officer. The police have asked prosecutors to investigate him for offenses against reputation and credit.

Resident: “Things that are online are exaggerated to begin with. Some people will believe them, others won't. If you're going to say something, then you have to take responsibility for it, right? That's why you should tell the truth.”

The police said the man admitted that he embellished his story to get online attention, but he had already broken the law. People are reminded that posts involving defamation, insults, and lies can be traced even when anonymous.
