Police Crack Cambodian Human Trafficking Group in Taiwan
Police forces have been trying hard to rescue Taiwanese victims being held captive and forced to work in telecom scam networks by human trafficking groups in Cambodia. Kaosiung Police has also cracked down a human trafficking group in Taiwan that targets young people between ages 20-30.
Confirmed that the suspect is inside, where a large number of police officers rushed in and demanded the suspect to stay down as they go over the list of the names of suspected individuals.
Police: “If there are others, please hand them over.”
This human trafficking group appears to target young people ages 20-30 to go to Cambodia, offering free air travel and high salaries, as well as a one-stop service chain that includes handling of passports, provision of accommodations, and transportation to Taoyuan Airport. After luring Taiwan nationals to Cambodia, those who wish to leave must pay on average US$20,000 or find themselves a substitute.
Hung Song-tien, Commander, Criminal Investigation Division, Kaohsiung Police: “(Concerning those suspects still in Cambodia) we have already issued arrest warrants. The actual time that Brother An (Liu) spent there is still under verification. As to (how long the trafficking group has been established) our special task force is still investigating.”
The 12 suspects arrested this time include recruiters from northern and southern sections of the human trafficking group. A suspect surnamed Liu has been confirmed by the police to be the leader of the human trafficking group. He currently remains in Cambodia and an arrest warrant has been issued.
Wallace Chow, Director, Dept. of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, MOFA: “Of Taiwanese nationals being trapped abroad, the latest stats as of today report a total of 521 people, and of those 100 have returned home. ”
Taking out those who have been rescued home, there are still 400 some people waiting to be rescued. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the government has formed a cross-departmental task force and will strive hard with the relevant units and authorities to bring Taiwan nationals home safe and sound.
