Human Traffickers Change Up Tactics
One director shared his experience on Facebook, saying that he almost fell trap to human trafficking when scammers tried to recruit him and his crew through ig messages for a job in Cambodia where accommodations and airfare will all be included.
Binger is a director and photographer who takes on freelance work. He previously worked with several famous musicians. He has also become a target of human traffickers. Binger recently received an Instagram DM that was purported to be from a new Chinese brand. It said that its crew got infected with COVID-19 and it was trying to find replacements to do a job in Cambodia, and would cover accommodations and airfare. There was also a sentence that raised Binger's suspicions.
Binger, Director: “Usually, it takes more time to discuss a project. There were also details about the script and filming and budget and schedule that she didn't have. She only asked how many crew members I could take with me, and I thought that was very odd.”
Many people shared their own experiences with fraudsters on Facebook. Illegal organizations use the same tactics and words. They use simplified characters, and their social media accounts seem to be fake. They also offer high salaries and stress that the situation is urgent. They also encourage their target to bring others along. Human traffickers continue coming up with new ways to lure Taiwanese people to Cambodia. They have tried their tactics on directors, magicians, and dancers, hoping to defraud an entire group all at once.
The police from Thailand and Taiwan recently teamed up to rescue nine Taiwanese people tricked into going to Cambodia while they were transiting through a Thai airport and save them from the fate of being sold to Myanmar. One of the nine was an accomplice of a human trafficking ring.
Liu Wei-pi, Chief Judge, Taoyuan District Court: “He worked with locals and introduced others to Cambodia for work. Much of the data in his mobile phone was deleted. His crimes are major. For these reasons, it was considered necessary to detain him.”
The man deleted information on his phone that put him in league with human traffickers after returning to Taiwan. A court agreed to detain him on Aug. 15 due to the severity of his crimes and the possibility of collusion and destruction of evidence.
