Motions Passed to Reestablish Relations with US|立院通過提案 促台美復交.

The Kuomintang Party brought up two motions and was later passed without any objections in a Legislative session. The motions includes the government should ask for U.S.' assistance in fighting against China and re-establish diplomatic relationship with the U.S. Premier Su Tseng-chang has also requested the Ministry of Education to investigate into a matter in which more than 70 public and private universities were demanded to sign a "One China Commitment" in order to recruit Chinese students.

In a Legislative session on October 6, the KMT Caucus proposed two motions, urging the government to ask the U.S. for assistance in fighting against China and re-establishing the diplomatic relationship with the U.S. as soon as possible. Premier Su Tseng-chang said KMT was the one who should take responsibility for breaking the diplomatic relationship with the U.S. and the government needs to take step by step in order to re-establish the relationship.

Finally the KMT has succumbed to its conscience. It is a good thing but we need to take it step by step in improving bilateral relationship.

Following recent U.S. government officials' visits to Taiwan and the announcement on U.S. military sales to Taiwan, the KMT Caucus urged the government to take this chance to reestablish its diplomatic relationship with the U.S. On the request for U.S. assistance for military defense, the KMT Caucus indicated in the motion that the government should convince the U.S., under the Taiwan Relations Act, to provide diplomatic, economic and safety assistance to fight against China if the safety of Taiwanese people are under threat from the Chinese Communist Party. The two motions were passed with unanimous votes from all political parties.

Minister Joseph Wu once said publicly that the government will not seek to establish diplomatic relations with the U.S. at this moment. But we think he is heading towards the wrong direction.

Everyone knows China has nothing to gain from these military drills. In fact, it could boost the U.S., Japan, Australia, India, and even Taiwan in the future, to form an alliance such as the NATO to fight against China. What good would China get out of it?

In another news related to China, a newspaper story recently reported that more than 70 public and private universities in Taiwan have secretly signed a "One China Commitment" under the request of China in order to recruit Chinese students.

There shouldn't be any political clauses embedded in academic exchanges. I will ask the Ministry of Education to look into this matter.

Premier Su Tseng-chang has instructed the Ministry of Education to investigate this matter under the grounds that academic exchanges should not be subjected to political intervention.
