Another person who's also under the spotlight, is Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu. During a interpellation on May 6, a city councilor said he should not be a "runaway mayor", while another accused Han's supporter of threatening his family. On the free economic pilot zone issue, Han called on the central government to consider Kaohsiung, however, the Executive Yuan responded that there was no such plan.
Last week, Kaohsiung City Councilor Chien Huan-tsung of the Democratic Progressive Party demanded to know whether Mayor Han Kuo-yu will run for president. On the 6th, Chien claimed a Han supporter was bullying and threatening his children and ordered Han to "manage" his supporters. In response, Han said he feels strongly about bullying and public opinion may be getting out of control.
The language that was used was very offensive.
Han asked the police to investigate and also asked his supporters to stay rational. During the interpellation, city councilors continued to ask if he was running for president, with some saying he should not be a "runaway mayor." Han did not respond. During a Facebook livestream on the 5th, Han addressed the free economic pilot zone issue that came up during the previous day's interpellation, saying he wanted to elaborate. He also called on the Tsai administration to choose Kaohsiung for its first free economic pilot zone if it moves forward with the plan. During a subsequent legislative interpellation, Executive Yuan Secretary-General Li Meng-yen said there is no such plan.
We have many experts researching and surveying this. As the mayor of Kaohsiung, I want to take advantage of every opportunity at every step, using every method, for every plan that could help Kaohsiung's economic development.
In response to Li saying he lacks understanding of the issue, Han said he has a team of experts researching the topic and he will not give up any opportunity to get Kaohsiung a free economic pilot zone.
