FRAUD SCANDAL INVESTIGATION SHOWS NTU PROFESSORS ON ADCADEMIC ETHICS VIOLATION |論文造假案 台大:郭.查.林違反學術倫理

National Taiwan University professor Kuo Min-liang and his research team were accused of using duplicated images and fabricated data in academic articles. On Jan.13, NTU announced the result of its preliminary investigation into these articles. Kuo, the first author of a pulled article Cha Shih-ting, and NTU hospital deputy director Lin Ming-tsan all violated academic ethics. NTU President Yang Pan-chyr, who is involved in the case, is still under investigation. ==KUO TA-WEI, NTU vice president== First of all, I would like to represent National Taiwan University to apologize to the public. We are very sorry for such an incident violating academic ethics. We will undertake deep and profound reflection. On Jan. 13, NTU vice president Kuo Ta-wei, who served as the convener of NTU teachers' evaluation committee, apologized to the public for the NTU biochemical sciences professor Kuo Min-liang and his research team's fabrication of data and images used in academic articles. According to the committee's initial investigation, Kuo apparently violated academic ethics. ==KUO TA-WEI NTU Vice President== According to our preliminary investigation, we have confirmed that Kuo violated academic ethics. Over the course of many years, he has made various levels of mistakes in academic articles. He did not fulfill his responsibility in instructing and supervising the team's research. His obvious malpractice can hardly absolve him from the blame. The committee believes that the pulled article NC2016 containing false images was beyond an unintentional mistake, and its first author Cha Shih-ting can hardly absolve her from the blame. Another first author, NTU hospital deputy director Lin Ming-Tsan was deemed to have violated academic ethics as well, in terms of his insufficient contribution to the article. ==KUO TA-WEI NTU Vice President== In terms of his contribution to the article, he is not be qualified to be listed as the first author.This has obviously violated international practice and academic ethics. Besides initiating an investigation into academic ethics, NTU also set up a special committee to look into the case, and the result of the preliminary review came out on Jan. 13. As to whether NTU president Yang Pan-chyrs, who co-authored some of the controversial academic articles, violated academic ethics, requires further investigation. So far, 16 academic articles have been reviewed. Two of them were pulled and 6 were passed. There are still 8 under investigation. The committee hopes that the review process can be completed before May. The result will be sent to the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education. Those who are found to be involved will be punished.
