On Dec.6, the Tsai Ing-wen government finally passed the amendments to the Labor Standards Act and cut the seven national holidays, solving one of the major challenges they face after Tsai took office. However, there is a still long way for the new government to implement all their proposed policies since issues such as lifting Japanese food import ban and legalizing same-sex marriage are met with violent opposition. On Dec.6, the Legislative Yuan finally passed the amendments to the Labor Standards Act. Meanwhile, the issue of whether to lift the ban on food products from the five radiation-affected prefectures in Japan remains unsolved. On Dec. 25, the Legislative Yuan will hold the first public hearing on food safety. The KMT, which called for a national referendum on lifting the food import ban, said they will hold a large protest to raise people's awareness of food safety. They will also invite distinguished scholars, such as Professor Lucy Sun Hwang, to join the Vote for Food Safety Alliance. ==LUCY SUN HWANG, Emeritus Professor, NTU Institute Food Sci. and Tech.== The ruling party should better understand what most people think on the issue. Voting in a national referendum is legal, and is a right which we people enjoy. Besides the issue on lifting the Japanese food import ban, there are three other challenges that the ruling Tsai Ing-wen government has to confront. Legalizing same-sex marriage, promoting transitional justice, and reforming pensions are still pending in the Legislative Yuan, waiting to be cleared. Both the DPP and KMT are prepared to fight to the end for their versions of legislation. ==WANG TING-YU, DPP legislator == To keep the country moving forward, and for the sake of Taiwan's development, we should face all challenges bravely. ==LEE YUN-CHIEH, professor, Dep. of Public Admin., Nat. Open University== The parties should not view each other as enemies, they should look each other as rivals in a malignant competition. They should take the matter on its merits and behave rationally during interpellations. It is said the government has asked the Ministry of Health and Welfare to reflect on their failures in responding to the issue on lifting Japanese food import ban. Lee believes that the Tsai government raised too many controversial issues at the same time, which gives the KMT room to maneuver. If the fierce battle between the two parties continues, the people will be the greatest loser.
