Last August, Typhoon Soudelor destroyed thousands of oyster shelves in Chiayi's coastal areas. Now, a year later, more than a thousand derelict oyster shelves still remain on the beach, despite the county government's proposal to offer NT$250 for every oyster shelf removed. According to local oyster farmers the money was simply not enough.
In Chiayi's coastal areas, abandoned oyster shelves stretch along the embankment. Last year, Typhoon Soudelor destroyed thousands of oyster shelves. A year later, more than one thousand shelves remain abandoned.

The government should really do something about these abandoned oyster shelves. We cannot afford to have another typhoon stacking up more destroyed oyster shelves. It's just not pretty.
==CHANG CHENG-I, Director, Promotional Department of Chiayi Fishermen's Association==
The county government proposed to offer NT$250 for every shelf removed, but the money doesn't cover the cost. The incentive is not strong enough.
The local fishermen's association said that the oyster shelves were abandoned at places lower than the embankment. Even with the help of heavy-duty vehicles, it still takes at least 2 to 3 people to remove an oyster shelf. The county government once proposed to offer NT$250 per oyster shelf removed, but the amount is simply not enough to compensate the time and manpower required.
==HSIAO YING-PI, Deputy Director-General, Dept. of Agriculture, Chiayi County Govt.==
We have opened tender offers twice to remove the abandoned oyster shelves, but they both failed. If we can have a successful bidder this time, the cleaning will be completed by the end of the month.
The abandoned oyster shelves have not been cleaned up over the past year because of two tender failures. Now that the typhoon season is arriving, local oyster farmers hope that the county government can speed up the operation to prevent further damage.
